What is a WARM UP match ??
A Warm up match may also be called a practice match and is played before any major tournament to help teams to prepare themselves for the upcoming competition. The main goal of this match is to let the players acclimatized to the conditions, check their skills and get know how about the pitch condition they are going to play. It helps them to prepare their strategies according to the local conditions.
Official
Status: these matches don’t have any official status and have
no effect on international ranking of teams or players. The outcome of the game
is not reflected in the official records of the team.
Team
Composition: In warm up matches main players are mostly
rested and a B-team is selected for the match. Teams also test different
combinations to minimize the impact of injury of a main player during the
tournament. Less experienced players are given a chance in warm up matches to
give them exposure of international cricket.
Rules: A
warm up match is just like another match and all the basic rules are intact for
the match. However some rules are relaxed like limit of player substitutions or
field restrictions during the match. For example in the current world cup 2023,
all the 15 players selected for the tournament can participate in the single warm
up match.
Result
Importance: The main purpose of the warm up match is
to prepare the team for the main tournament and match result is not as pivotal
as that of an official match.
Audience
& Broadcasting: These matches have mostly very limited
audience. Moreover, media coverage of these matches is not as extensive as of
the main matches of the tournament.
Warm-up matches are important for teams to check their strengths and flaws and get into the proper shape before a major competition. They help players familiarize to different conditions and allow the coaching staff to make crucial decisions about team composition and strategies.
